AI + BIM for Construction Planning: What 47 Studies Show
Evidence-based Professional Insight · Construction Planning · 2026
Artificial intelligence and Building Information Modelling (BIM) are increasingly discussed as tools for better construction planning. A 2026 systematic review helps separate promising applications from claims that still need rigorous, project-level proof.
What the research examined
The review by Serena Vitaliano, Stefano Cascone and Claudia Arcidiacono, published in Sustainability on 19 August 2026, assessed 47 journal articles using a PRISMA-guided process. It focused on AI–BIM integration for construction cost and time planning, grouped into time-oriented, cost-oriented and multi-objective approaches.
What appears promising
The reviewed literature identifies applications in schedule planning, estimating and resource allocation. Artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms were among the most frequently reported methods. BIM provides structured project information, although data exchange between applications is not always seamless.
What remains uncertain
The review finds that potential reductions in material waste, rework, equipment idle time and safety risks were mostly inferred rather than measured directly. Dataset adequacy was rated medium in 32 studies and low in 15, while benchmark availability was rated high in only eight. These findings should not be generalised across projects or BIM environments without empirical verification; interoperability and real-project validation remain priorities.
A practical management perspective
A responsible starting point is not to automate a critical project decision immediately. Define a narrow planning use case, assess model and data quality, establish a baseline, and compare proposed outputs against verified project records. Human review should remain part of cost, schedule and risk decisions. A controlled pilot should also document data provenance, assumptions, access controls, and measurable acceptance criteria.
